Debate On Disarming
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, November 12. The United Nations disarmament debate was suspended yesterday to give the Soviet Union and 46 small nations time to work out a compromise on guide-lines for future negotiations. The Main Political Committee had been due to vote on an omnibus resolution put forward by the 46 countries, most of them non-aligned, giving new directives to the United Nations Disarmament Committee in Geneva. However, a last-minute hitch developed when the Soviet Union asked the 46 nations to amend their resolution. The effect of the Soviet amendments would be to send the disarmament negotiators back to Geneva without binding instructions. The Political Committee met for less than 10 minutes and adjourned when the spokesman for the 46 small nations, Chief S. O. Adebo, of Nigeria, asked for a break to give the co-sponsors time “to decide what to do.”
