YACHTING DESIGNED CUP CHALLENGER
Mr Allan Payne To Retire (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, Nov. 10. The designer of the America's Cup challenger, Gretel, Mr Allan Payne, has retired from naval architecture. He has accepted a job as a designer with a Sydney engineering firm. “I am sorry to be leaving the field,” he said. “But when you get a better offer you have no alternative but to accept.” Mr Carl Halvorsen, a partner in the firm which built Gretel at Ryde, Sydney, described Mr Payne's decision as a tragedy to Australian yachting. "Allan is a brilliant yacht designer, perhaps the best in the world,” said Mr Halvorsen.
