Golf NEW PLAYER WINS OPEN
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PALM SPRINGS (California), Nov. 11. A newcomer to professional golf, Frank Beard, won his first tournament yesterday when he shot a two under par 69 in the final round of the Frank Sinatra open. He finished with a six under par 278 to win the 72-hole tournament. Jerry Steelsmith, another young professional who has never won a tournament, also shot a final round of 69 and took second place at 279, one stroke behind Beard. A veteran, Don Finsterwald, finished with a 69 and a 72-hole score of 280 to tie with Mason Rudolph for third place. Rudolph had a final round of 70.
