Denial Of Spying

The Soviet Union's United Nations delegation denied tonight that three of its members had taken part in a spy plot and said they had been arrested illegally, the Associated Pess reported. The delegation made the denial in a Note to the United States delegation. At the same time, a Soviet delegation source said the three men would leave for home tomorrow in response to a United States demand. They are Gleb Pavlov, aged 39, an attache; . Yuri Romashin, aged 38, a third secretary; and Vladimir Olenev. aged 37, an employee of the Soviet delegation. The three men were declared unwelcome yesterday after an American engineer and a Soviet chauffeur were arrested on Tuesday on espionage charges. The three Russians are members of the Soviet mission to the United Nations and have diplomatic status. They were given 48 hours to leave the country. United States sources said the Soviet Embassy in Washington protested yesterday over the treatment of the Russians while they were held briefly by United States agents. The American engineer and the Soviet chauffeur, who has no diplomatic immunity, are being held for trial.
