REUTERS NEWS AGENCY

Executives On Visit To N.Z.

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 29

Three executives of Reuters, | the world-wide news agency, arrived in New Zealand today on a five-day visit. They are Mr John Burgess, chairman, Mr Gerald Long, general manager, and Mr David Chipp. manager for Southeast Asia and Japan. Mr Long, recently appointed to his post, said he would visit Wellington, Rotorua and Auckland. The visit was part of a tour to meet people with whom Reuters worked.

He would visit the Wellington headquarters of the New Zealand Press Association, a partner in Reuters, and hold discussions with members. The possible use of Compac—the Pacific submarine cable that would eventually provide a direct telephone and teleprinter link round the Commonwealth—would be discussed.

Mr Long said Reuters role in todays complex world was “to try to say what happened as simply, clearly and accurately as possible—to report events clearly and dispassionately. “We don't interpret or comment, but we report opinions of those who are qualified to interpret and comment.”
