IMPORTS OF SPIRITS
Govt. Attitude Explained (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA. Sept. 11. The allocation of spirit import licences in New Zealand would be examined later in the licensing year in the light of funds available and the stock position in the country, said the Minister of Customs (Mr. Shelton), in Rotorua today. “I cannot give you any joyful news of an increase in allocations,” he said ait the annual conference of the Wholesale Wine Spirit Merchants’ Federation. New Zealand had a firstclass gin industry, which was to be further enlarged, and had an increasingly efficient and rapidly improving wine industry, he said. ‘‘Taking all this into account, and being forced by necessity to conserve overseas exchange, I reluctantly came down on the side of making no increase in the licence for whisky, brandy and rum.”
