Comments On Proposed Bealey Avenue Laning
About six . written comments on the proposal to put traffic lanes in Bealey avenue had been received by the Christchurch City Council traffic, department, said the chairman of the traffic committee (Cr. T. D. Flint) yesterday. One of the comments was not in favour of the proposal One of the comments in favour of the proposal was from the Automobile Association (Canterbury). One writer said he hoped the council would “. . . not be swayed by the views of those who only want to use the roads for parking ” Another said he thought the move was in the rigpt direction, although he was sure it would take time to educate the motorists He agreed with prohibiting the parking of cars along the median strip. A third considered the suggestion “most valuable,”
and remarked that Christchurch drivers had not bad sufficient experience in driving under lane traffic conditions
“Why wait to ask everybody’s views?” said aother comment. “City councillors are elected by the citizens to do a job for them and are given the responsibility to do it. My view is put the scheme into effect and include Fitzgerald avenue as well.”
The one objection to the proposal was on the grounds of the loss of parking space if parking beside the median strip was forbidden. It referred particularly to the loss of parking space near the Victoria street-Bealey avenue intersection.
Cr Flint said he had also received verbal comments in favour of the proposals. He hoped more motorists and interested persons would comment on the proposal.
