GAMES FOR PROVINCE

Lot Of Work Envisaged

Work was abl anyone would get by joining the Empire Games Promotion (Canterbury) Society, said Mr B. J. Drake, the chairman, at a meeting of the committee last evening. For that reason the society did not want to deter anyone by setting a high subscription figure. “We went the annual subscription to be as small as possible because we want people who are prepared to work, not pay money," said Mr Drake. The committee was discussing the society’s draft constitution, which sets an entrance fee of sgns for corporate members and unincorporated bodies wishing to appoint members. Mr R. J. Styles recalled that of the 1950 Games “did hot think big enough, quick enough” and emphasised the need for a tremendous amount of effort. It had to be borne in mind, however, that the Empire Games would probably go to the Northern Hemisphere in 1970, and Canterbury might have to wait until 1974. Under the constitution, the society’s objects are to promote the British Commonwealth and Empire Games in Canterbury on such dates as may be approved by the Games Council, to raise any funds necessary for that and to buy property with a view to carrying out the society’s objects.

Membership is open mainly to every municipal corporation and county council in Canterbury, and the controlling bodies of any amateur sports in the province. At general meetings four representatives of the Chrisitohuroh City Council, three representatives of every other municipal corporation and county council, and two representatives of every other corporate member may vote.

The executive committee will comprise the society's officers, chairman of committees, one Christchurch City Council representative, two representatives of other councils and 10 members at large. A meeting for the incorporation of the society will be held on October 24.
