ESCAPES BY PRISONERS
39 So Far This Year (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. There had not been any marked increase in the number of prison l escapes recently, said the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) tonight, commenting on recent newspaper 1 reports about the frequency of escapes. The type of prisoner escaping in the last tew months had attracted r publicity and had been the’cause of public concern, he said. But it was wrong to think escapes were now much more frequent than before. Escapes in the last five years were:—l9sB, 63; 1959, 63; 1960, 50; 1961, 42; 1962, 44.
So far this year 39 prisoners had escaped
