USE OF D.D.T.
Report For Cabinet The recommendations of the Agricultural Chemicals Board were now being processed by the Department of Agriculture for consideration by the Cabinet, and it was expected that some course of action would be announced by the Cabinet next week, the Director-General of Agriculture (Mr D. N. R. Webb) said in a telephone interview from Wellington yesterday. Drafts of regulations which' would be necessary to implement the recommendations of the board were being prepared by the department, Mr Webb added. According to a spokesman for the Minister of Health (Mr McKay), the reports of the Christchurch health office on any changes which might exist from D.D.T. at the Hornby works of Kempthorne Prosser and Company. Ltd., will be made public today. The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) in Wellington last night said that the original report by the Public Health Division of the Health Department had been checked by the D.S.I.R. Hie recommendations resulting from it had been distributed to medical officers of health throughout the country. The recommendations had been drawn up by the chief chemical inspector of the department, Mr R T. Douglas. Mr McKay told “The Press” Parliamentary reporter that the medical officers throughout the country had been instructed by the Director-General of Health, Dr. H. B. Turbott. to inspect any works in their districts in conjunction with the Labour Department, to review the conditions of handling D.D.T, there, and to ensure that the conditions were satisfactory. Mr McKay said that he had advised the secretary of tire Canterbury Freezing Workers’ Union, Mr S. Arnst, that the Health Department’s report on the handling of D.D.T at the Hornby factory Kempthorne Prosser, Ltd., would be delivered to him today.
