RACING Magician May Run In Hawke’s Bay Guineas
Riccarton may have two runners in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas at Hastings on September 25.
Magician and Boundless were nominated for the Hastings classic on Monday and their programmes will probably be settled after they have run in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday.
An alternative programme for Magician would be a start in the Dunedin Guineas, run on October 5.
Mr H. D. Greenwood’s good colt was also nominated for the Wingatui classic on Monday. If the northern programme is chosen Magician will probably be accompanied by Apparel, which has been nominated for hack races at Hastings. Apparel runs in the Ashburton club’s Methven Improvers’ Handicap on Saturday, and will be ridden by C. McDonald. Trials In Fog Six-furlong barrier trials at Riccarton yesterday showed Navarone, St. Malo, Valuate, Boundless, and Misjudge to advantage. They sprinted while there was a thick fog over the course and could not be timed. Navarone, St. Malo, and Valuate were first home in the first trial. Navarone sprinted keenly and shaped as if he will run well against the open sprinters at Ashburton. St. Malo, which was disappointing in a sprint with Valuate and Magician last
Saturday, did better in yesterday’s trial, and this show ; of something like his best heightens interest in the John Grigg Stakes.
N. Eastwood rode St. Malo, and the chestnut carried less weight than Valuate, which had C. McDonald up, and Navarone, which was ridden by W. Traecey. Boundless won another trial from the starting gate. He was ridden by G. W. Mein and finished a length clear of Misjudge (W. Martin). Boundless took time to come to his best as a two-year-old, aind might find success elusive in the John Grigg Stakes unless the ground is firm.
Misjudge had a light-weight up, but did well to finish so close to Boundless. It could have been a win-
ning gallop for the Wakanui Maiden Stakes at Ashburton. Counit Pierre, ridden by his
trainer, N. Cowles. did a sound run over four standard hurdles yesterday. If he gains his qualifying tickert—he is on test tarnor-
now—he will probably race against toe hurdlers at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting. The Wingatoi jockey, R. J. Skelton, will rode Sir Athol in the Ashburton Cup on Saturday. Hlih judgment was astray when he switched from Sir Athol to Rhythm Rein in the Tinwald Handicap ait Ashburton last Saturday week. Sir Athol, a Chance mount for M. J. Skelton, won easily, and Rhythm Rein ran third'
Rhythm Rein will oppose Sir Athol again on Saturday, and R. J. Skelton will probably go into this race won-
dering if it is time to be off with the old and on with the new.
