N.Z. Manufactture
Sir, —Whenever I find that New Zealand enterprise is going to supply all our requirements in yet another commodity I can't help shuddering, because so often it means that we are compelled to accept an inferior article at a considerably higher price. We are now manufacturing our own requirements in paper. Almost immediately school exercise books have gone up Id or 2d in price, and this is only the beginning. With a small population to cater for and a high wage structure, we just cannot compete with other countries in the production of such articles as radio, television sets, photographic supplies. etc., and in my humble opinion we are foolish to try For a long time now Kellys of Newtown, Sydney, have been advertising fully-guaran-teed reconditioned television sets for 29 guineas. Is there any genuine reason why television sets here are stall over £150? I don't intend to purchase one until they are less than £lOO. Yours, etc., KIWI. August 20, 1963.
