Christchurch Boxers At Ashburton Tournament

Christchurch boxers predominated and took the lion’s share _ of the prizes at the Ashburton Boxing Association's tournament in the Ashburton Sports Hall on Saturday night. Main attraction was the bout between D McKenna and B Pope, both of Christchurch. McKenna started briskly, but wilted quickly and lasted only 15 seconds of the second round before the referee gave his decision of a knock-out to Pope. Pope looked more business-l;'-e and downed the more solid McKenna with short bursts of powerful punches. Pope holds the Canterbury light-weight championship and McKenna was New Zeaand fly-weight champion in 1956 and feather-weight champion in 1961. Ashburton's J.
