Seaside Planting

Sir, —The tree-planting season is once again drawing to a close and the City Council reserves department, while doing excellent work elsewhere, has again failed to plant shelter and shade trees along our beach frontages. The strip of land along Marine parade south of Shackleton street is particularly suitable for development, but still no action. Since trees take 10 years or more to reach a size suitable for shade, the outlook for the thousands of ratepayers who frequent our city beaches can best be described as “hot and dry, with fresh easterlies." for many years to come.— Yours, etc., SANDY SANDWICHES. August 7, 1963. [The acting director of reserves <Mr G. Henderson) said: “Plans have been prepared for the development of the foreshore area south of Shackleton street and tree planting will be carried along the foredune as opportunity permits.”]
