S. Africans Might Test N.Z. Defence
'Neu) Zealand Press Association; AUCKLAND. August 9. Two Australians, two South Africans who play as professions in Australia and two who play in England will help to make up the South African team in the Rugby League match against New Zealand tomorrow.
The two Australians are the hooker, F. Anderson, and the middle row forward, G. Wilson; the two professional players from Australia, A. Skene and the captain, F. Griffiths; and the two who play in England, the Wakefield Trinity five-eights, C. Greenwood, and the Widnes wing, J Gaydon. However, it could be from one of the other seven players who have helped pioneer the game in South Africa over the last two years that their star may be found. South Africa is not expected to beat the strong New Zealand s : de but could run it close. The tourists were beaten. 34-6. and. 54-21, in 'heir two test matches against Australia last month, but have shown great improvement since these matches. Use Of Backs New Zealand has weaknesses on defence which might be probed and should South Africa elect to use its backs more than it has done in three matches played in New Zealand so far. the side's chances would be improved. To date, it had concentrated mainly on tight, crashing forward play and the backs have been virtually starved. The teams are: South Africa.—G. Smit, J Gaydon. A. Skene. F Griffiths J. Pierterse. C Glenwood. M Gerieke. V Jacobs. G. Wilson M Pelser. Pelser, F Anderson B. Oberholzer. New Zealand.—J Fagan, B Reidy R. Bailey. G. Kennedy. K McCracken, J Bond. W Snowden. M. Cooke. D Hammond. R Sinel. M Emery. G Blaekler S. Edwards. The re f eree is Mr A. Payne < Auckland).
