Double Parking

Sir, —A short time ago, ths City Council very properly declined to give preferential parking to the medical profession, on the grounds that all sections of the motoring public should be treated alike. In spite of this, one can see, on any day of the week, private motorists being given parking offence notices while commercial vehicles remain unmolested in the same street Double parking is very dangerous for even the briefest period, and traffic officers must be encouraged to stamp out such practices. In addition, the council is placing its officers in an invidious position in asking them to discriminate between motorists, the very policy the council professes to condemn. The plaintive cry of the carriers that they must be able to deliver the goods by day is no longer valid. Business must be geared to modern traffic conditions or vice-versa, but not at the expense of safety.—Yours, etc., FRANK LANDIE.

July 19, 1963. [The Traffic Superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) said: “This department is taking all steps possible to eliminate double - parked vehicles. However, under the existing regulations, goods senrice vehicles are permitted to double park providing they do so with due consideration for road users, and that no alternative parking facilities are available, and they are in the course of loading or unloading goods.”]
