FLAGONS CAUSE OF HEATER FIRES

GISBORNE, July 23. The use of flagons for refuelling kerosene heaters has been condemned by the Wairoa Fire Board. The chief fire officer (Mr J. G. W. Duley) reported to the board that he knew of four house fires in Wairoa which had been caused through the refuelling of kerosene heaters from faulty bottles. In one case last month a house was extensively dam-

aged and its contents com pletely destroyed. The chairman of the boar< (Mr R. E. Shortt) said th attention of users should b forcefully drawn to the dan ger of using bottles not sup plied by the manufacturer of kerosene heaters. Mr H. M. Daniel sail manufacturers supplied th standard bottles, but whei these broke persons usei ordinary flagons which, un fortunately, fitted most kero sene appliances. He was commenting on statement by Mr Duley, wh had examined some of th bottles responsible for firei Mr Duley said the thicknes of the glass of these bottle varied from one-sixteenth t three-sixteenths of an incl and could not withstam much of a knock.
