Bishop Calls For Govt. Action
(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, July 22.
Urgent Government action to attack rent racketeering and land speculation was demanded yesterday by the Bishop of Southwark (Dr. Mervyn Stockwood), the “Daily Sketch” reported. Dr. Stockwood called on the priests of his diocese to champion the “defenceless” victims of Rachman-type landlords.
“Let the parish priests expose the racketeers and call up the local authorities and the police to assist them,” he said. “This battle, which constitutes a major challenge to the Government and to the nation, must be fought and won.” . . Dr. Stockwood said: It is a sad reflection upon our socalled affluent society that it requires a Rachman scandal to convince the nation of the seriousness of the „ housing situation in London.”
