INVERCARGILL, Jub 23. Henry Raymond Tangiwai today gave evidence in the Supreme Court at Invercargill against William Francis Hollands, who is on trial on a charge of robbing and assaulting James Torrance Scott, aged 63 Tangiwai was sent to prison for four years when he appeared for sentence on a similar charge today. Hollands, aged 23, a workman. is charged with the robbery of Scott outside the North End Bowling Club’s pavilion, at Queens Park, on the night of June 19. last. He has pleaded not guilty. Tangiwai admitted the charge in the Lower Court last week
The trial is before Mr Justice Henry. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr J. R. Mills, said the “cow ardly. vicious and brutal attack” was one of the worst cases of aggravated robbery committed in Invercargill
Tangiwai, aged 20. a workman, said he and Hollands agreed to “do a job” at the pavilion. Tangiwai said he expected to find liquor there After Hollands had smashed two windows in the building, both men climbed through A little later Scott
walked past the window Hollands chased after and caught him. “Hollands was punching the old man and the old man was trying to protect himself.” said Tangiwai. Hollands called Tangiwai to help him. Hollands told Tangiwai to look through Scott’s pockets “After I had finished going through his pockets. 1 stood up and kicked him in the face.” said Tangiwai. Tangiwai said he kicked Scott about six times. He was wearing boots. At the same time, Hollands kicked Scott in the ribs.
Tangiwai said he found about £7O which he shared with Hollands. They ran away from the park and later took a taxi to Timaru where the taxidriver reported them to the police. Twenty-four other witnesses gave evidence for the Crown.
