RECRUITING TEACHERS
Nelson Board Quota (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 23. Because recruiting had not been completed, it is not known whether the Nelson Education Board could fill its quota of 65 teacher-trainee applications this year. The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) gave this reply on behalf of the Minister of Education, (Mr Tennent) to Mr W. E. Rowling (Opposition, Buller) in Parliament today. Recruiting was being done in two stages, the first ending about now and the second in the third term, Mr McKay said The Nelson board had had little difficulty in filling its quota in the last two years.
Mr Rowling asked how the problem of student hostel accommodation, quoted as the major deterrent to applicants was being overcome. Mr McKay said hostels would be built when urgently needed. Hostel accommodation did not seem a deterrent at Christchurch Teachers’ College, where most Nelson applicants attended, and there were no immediate plans for additions.
