“Leper Man” In Fiji

The secretary of the New Zealand Lepers’ Trust Board (Mr P. J. Twomey) is at present in Fiji making arrangements for the rehabilitation of lepers discharged as cured from Makogai Island. Because of failing health this may be Mr Twomey’s last visit to the South Pacific. Mr Twomey also intends to visit the Solomon Islands to make final arrangements for the building of a hospital dispensary for the Anglican Mission on the island of Ugl, in the South Solomons. This dispensary, which will cost £3OOO, will be built in part by voluntary mission labour. It will be dedicated to the tea drinkers of New Zealand, who have provided the money by sending tea coupons to the Leper Trust Board. By the close of the present appeal for tea coupons, which will end on January 31. 1964, Mr Twomey hopes that sufficient funds will be available from this source to build two additional treatment centres for the Methodist ano Roman Catholic Missions in the South Solomons.
