FIVE-POINT MARGIN

Shirley Beats St. Andrew’s

Shirley Boys’ High School scored its second successive victory over St. Andrew’s College when it won 11-6 at Shirley on Saturday. Shirley deserved to win because it was more resourceful and a shade less stereotyped than St. Andrew’s. The Shirley forwards were quicker to the ball and the Shirley backs were quicker to suit the method of attack to the moment than were the St. Andrew's backs. In tackling, however, some Shirley backs could learn from their opponents. The teams were:—

St. Andrew’s College.—G. W. Stone; L. D. Smith. P F Le Lievre. T. G. Sutherland; J. G. Walkinshaw (vice-captain), P. A. Stubbings; J. R. Harper; G P. Rennie, M. J. B. Arthur. M. P. Robinson, R. W. Hearn. M. H. Willis. P. F. Ullrich G. I. T. Evans (captain) M. G. Malthus.

Shirley Boys’ High School.— J. C. Gibson; A. B. McDonald. R. T. Scrivener. W. F Pullart; W. A Robinson. B. R. Gardener (vice-captain); R. Hair; R. J. Bell. C. F. Cochrane. R. J. Knight. B. W. Cox, W. H. Swallow. G. C. Gass, R. B. Parlane, D. W. Cowan. Each of the four wing threequarters scored a try. The try which tipped the balance was scored by the Shirley side-row forward. Swallow. He took a misjudged clearing kick beautifully at top speed and scored after a determined run. Cox. who had missed some easier kicks, made no mistake with the conversion. The best of the three-quarters' tries was the one scored bv Smith for St. Andrew's. The St. Andrew's backs swept the length of the field to be held up on the left touch Play was quickly switched to the right and Smith, with a nicely-engineered overlap. used his speed to score. Shirley was distinctly superior tn the inside backs. Gardener. the first five-eighths, was a cool and competent tactician. His tactical kicking was judged to a nicety and resulted in the tries scored by the wings. Pullar and McDonald. Outside him. Robinson and Scrivener alternating as inside and outside centres, showed penetration. The outstanding St. Andrew’s back was the second fiveeighths, Walkinshaw. He ran well and rarely allowed the ball to die with him. Le Lievre showed straight-running ability

The dominant forward was the Shirley lock, Cox. He jumped well in the line-outs and was impressive in the loose. Robinson was an excellent lineout jumper for St. Andrew’s. Both packs played well in the tight, and in set serums Parlane (Shirley) and Evans (St. Andrew’s) both won tightheads. The referee was Mr A. V Langford.
