Sportsman's Notebook Indians Arrange 1964 Hockey Tour

An Indian national hockey team will tour New Zealand next year The secretary of the New Zealand Hockey Association (Mr M. R Good) said that a letter containing advice that the tour had been accepted was received from the Indian Hockey Federation yesterday. It wiU be the fourth Indian team to visit New Zealand, and the second national team. In 1926 an Indian Army side lost only one of 21 matches. The next tour was in 1935, and it has always been regarded as the greatest hockey team ever seen in New Zealand. Captained by Dhian Chand, it was unbeaten, scoring 307 goals and conceding only 21. In 1938 the Prince of Mandavar’s team toured, and in 1955 and 1951 teams sponsored by the Punjab Farmers’ Sports Associations made successful tours. ¥ ¥ ¥ Nelson Harriers The Nelson Harrier Club’s championships will be held in two weeks’ time. There will be four classes in the championships—colts, junior, women and senior. B. Jacobsen, who won a colts race at Burwood on June 3. is expected to take another title, and other form runners are F Day. B. Cuthbert. B. Mercer and D Win. G. Griffiths and A. Ward have dominated the junior races »o far this season and are expected to fight out that championship In the women's section. M. Thomas has been recording the fastest times. Other likely runners are P. West-

ley, J. Jonson, M. Webb and J. Silcock.

The Motueka branch of the club is expected to take the top places in the senior race. Its runners—G. Wyatt, L. Evans and D. Cole—have all been running well this season. ¥¥ t ¥ All Black’s Injury The All Black winger, D. McKay, will go into hospital soon to have an operation on his right knee. McKay said that the knee had been troubling him for some time and there was the possibility that part of the knee cap had been chipped and the bone was “floating” around in the knee. ¥ ¥ ¥ Boxing Blows The Hutt Valley Boxing Association, formerly a leading organisation in New Zealand, has gone into recess. At one time the association was one of the wealthiest in the Dominion after it had promoted fights featuring the national champion. Bos Murphy. It is understood that now its funds stand at only £l5. The reason given by officials for going into recess was that there was insufficient public support for professional bouts.

The Auckland Boxing Association, also, is having trouble. Two Samoans, Fred Tuapola and Filo Manuoa, were to have fought in the main bout at Auckland next Monday, but Tuapola has disappeared without trace, in spite of all the efforts of the Auckland officials to find him.
