Troops are combing the mountains of Northern Iraq for the “Red Mullah,” the Kurdish insurgent leader, Mullah Mustafa Al Barzani, and his followers. The operation against the Kurds follows a Government ultimatum to them to lay down their arms. Badgad Radio says the traitors have sustained “heavy losses” in the operation, which began in the Erbil district. A reward of 100,000 dinars (about £100,000) has been offered for the “Red Mullah,” who is now in his sixties. He has been waging the Kurdish struggle for autonomy against various Iraqi Governments for 30 years. In Vienna yesterday, Mr Jalal Talabani, a leader of the Kurdish insurgents, called on “all free nations’’ to help them with funds and men. Later, in Paris, Mr Talabani said he would protest to the United Nations SecretaryGeneral, U Thant, against the “genocide practised by the Iraqi Government.”
