GEOLOGICAL PUBLICATIONS
Waipara And Kaikoura
A bulletin on the geology of the Waipara district, and the Kaikoura sheet of the New Zealand four-miles-to-the-inch geological series, have just been published by the Geological Survey, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
The Waipara bulletin contains a geological map at one mile to the inch, and 122 pages of text which include numerous photographs and diagrams. The bulletin is No. 64 in the Geological Survey series, and the map is No. S6B-69. The area covered extends from Omihi to Sefton and Motunau to Loburn. It includes the middle Waipara river, which is one of the classic areas of New Zealand geology since it shows almost unbroken stratigraphical sequences extending from the Upper Cretaceous through the Lower and Middle Tertiary. The main work of the bulletin was done by Mr D. D. Wilson in the Christchurch office of the survey.
The area covered by the Kaikoura four-mile sheet extends from Blenheim to Kaikoura and inland almost to Tophouse. It is Sheet 16 in the series. Features shown include innumerable active faults, including the four main active faults of the northeast part of the South Island. The sheet was compiled by Mr G. J. Lensen in the Wellington district office of the survey.
