Naming The Coinage
Sir, —Many terms for the new currency unit have been put forward but most fail to give satisfaction. The popular name, zeal, sounds clumsy and distinctly unmonetary. I would suggest Sterling. This retains the link with the old pound, which, with the dollar, would cause confusion if used, and sounds like a currency denomination. The £ sign could be retained. For the smaller unit,' the retention of the penny would be quite satisfactory. There are enough cents, centavos, cen■tisimi, centimes, centimes, and such-like in the world as it is.—Yours, etc., D.L.A. June 10, 1963.
