Council Cottages
Sir, —Should a fatal accident say, in a car, befall a couple owning a council cottage for their lifetime, a year after first occupation, whose is it?—Yours, etc., GAMBLING CHANCES. June 4, 1963. •[The chairman of the housing committee of the. Christchurch. City Council (Cr. G. D. Griffiths) said: “The proposed licence will grant the licensee occupancy for and during his life (the term licensee includes the plural and means, in this context, the death of the survivor). The correspondent’s inquiry is assumed to be about the position should both husband and wife be deceased within a short time after occupancy commences. Under the terms and conditions of the licence, the estate would receive no benefit, although it is probable that, in the circumstances described by ‘Gambling Chances,’ the council would consider the matter without prejudice. One of the .clauses in the agreement reads: ‘The licensee acknowledges that he has obtained independent legal advice as to the terms, conditions, and effect of this licence prior to his execution of the same.' ”]
