Coltara and the New Zea-land-owned Teneriffe are still equal favourites for the Grand National Hurdle after a thrilling tussle in the Marlborough Hurdle yesterday. Melbourne turf writers said today The national is to be run over three miles at Flemington. Melbourne, on July 6 In the Marlborough Hurdle »t Flemington yesterday Coltara beat Teneriffe by half a length. Turf writers said that Teneriffe was having his first hurdle start in Australia and only for blundering at the third last and last obstacles he would almost certainly have won Stewards asked Teneriffe’s rider Peter Mohi. why he permitted Coltara to get away from him between the second to last and last hurdles Mohi explaied that. as Teneriffe had not raced beyond a mile and a half, he wanted to nurse the golding for the run home. Stewards reported that Mohi claimed that Teneriffe would still have won if he had not bungled the last jump The New Zealand horse Elrey has been penalised 71b. to 10-11 ui the Grand National Hurdle foe his two recent wins tn New Zealand which included the Great Northern Hurdles with 9-8— his second win in that race However turf writers said today that Elrey would probably not come to Australia Bookmakers, they said were not including the horse in their Grand National quotes. The New Zealand-bred Contador is second favourite for the Grand National Steeple to be run over three miles and one furlong at Flemington on July 13. He pulled up well after finishing fifth in the Birthday Handicap won by Rising Rocket at Flemington yesterday Contador was inconvenienced by a plate which shifted shortly after the start Odd Boots is outright favourite for the steeple.
