Scaffold Workers’ Examinations
The first examinations for certificates of competency in scaffolding work will be held in August. Regulations under the Construction Act, 1959. limit the erection of certain scaffolding to ’ “competent scaffolders” those who have passed the examination for a particular type of scaffolding. Candidates for the examination may be required to give a practical demonstration before a panel of examiners. They will be required to have had suitable training and sufficient experience in erecting and dismantling that kind of scaffolding in which they are being examined They must also have had at least three months’ recent experience in this work as a leading hand or in charge of scaffolding. The district superintendent of the Department of Labour (Mr C. P Collins) said yesterday the examinations would provide an adequate labour force of informed and competent charge hands who would ensure safe working conditions throughout the Construction industry.
