Extra Pay For Jury Service By Watersiders
Waterside workers are paid twice the amount others receive for a half-day's jury service in the Supreme Court —whether or not they actually serve on a jury. Normally a juryman who is called to attend at the court for only half a day is paid £l. The rate for a full day is £2. * Waterside workers are required to report at the wharves for work in the early morning. Failure to be at work in the morning loses them a full day’s employment, whether or not Hey are free to work after a brief attendance at court. They therefore fall within a provision in the regulations governing payment of jury fees and are paid as if for a full day’s service. Jurymen who are in a similar position to that of waterside workers may have their cases decided on application to the court.
A representative of the Waterfront Industry Commission said men on jury service were not paid for the days on which they were required to attend the court, but these days were counted in calculation of annual and statutory holidays.
Employers of other jurymen often make up the difference between the jury fee and a usual day’s pay. All jurymen are compensated for any travelling expenses incurred in their attendance at the court. Tax of Is 6d in the £ 1 is deducted from their fees on payment. If a man is paid more than £l2 in any one year in jury fees he is required to declare this for taxation purposes in an individual return of income.
