NEW SOCIAL CENTRE

Demolition Of Old Buildings

Over the next 18 months, buildings worth more than £72,000 will be erected on the site of the Salvation Army Men's Social Service Centre at Addington. The acceptance of a tender for clearance of old buildings was announced yesterday. For many years the centre has used the immigration barracks which were built for early settlers arriving from Lyttelton almost 100 years ago. These will be demolished, leaving only the present administration' block and the resident officer’s house, which is to be moved and renovated. The clearance tender accepted. of £21,670, was made by J. N. Grant, Ltd. This first phase of the project will include the construction of new workshops and the renovation of the staff house. The second stage will include a 30-bed eventide home for men, and is expected to cost about £72,000. Tenders will be called for this in about six months, and the entire project is expected to be complete by the end of 1964.

“Money given in the recent Helping Hand Appeal, and a Government grant which will largely cover the cost of the eventide home, have made the project possible." Brigadier F. W. Hay, manager of the centre, said last night. Work on the site would begin this month, he said.
