FIRE DAMAGES HOUSE
Smoke Wakens Family
When Mr and Mrs J. E. Hyde were going to bed on Sunday night, they noticed that there was some smoke in the kitchen of their home at 109 Hackthome road. They searched for anything on fire, but could find nothing amiss. They went to bed. thinking that the kitchen fire had been smoking a bit in the gusty, south-west wind. Mr Hyde was awakened early on Monday morning by smoke which filled the sixroomed, wooden bungalow. The kitchen and two rooms at thef back of the house, nearest the road, were well ablaze.
Mr Hyde woke his wife and four young children and bundled them out of the house before going to the next-door neighbour to telephone the fire brigade. Two engines from the headquarters and Sydenham fire stations answered the call and made a good save. The wind blew the flames from the back to the front of the house between the ceiling and roof.
The fire was apparently caused by a fault in the chimney which caused a stud in ‘he ceiling to fire.
Three rooms and the roof were severely damaged, and water and smoke caused some damage to the remainder of the house. The house was insured. The Hyde family are staying with relatives until their home is repaired.
