Council Seeks Tenancy
Steps would be taken to secure the tenancy of the former immigration hostel for the Lyttelton Borough Council. the council decided art a meeting last night. The council will ask the local member. Mr N. E Kirk, to take the necessary steps. Cr E A. Camfield said that he had spoken to Mr Kirk on the subject Mr Kirk had said •he would possibly a pproaclj the Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard). Cr. Camfield said the hostel would be of great benefit to many Lyttelton organisations Many bodies in the borough seemed to be in need of accommodation. These included the St. John Ambulance. football clubs, and many- others The hostel building, he said, was ideally suited for local activities because it had five large rooms, five small rooms, many groups of toilets several small kitchen units, was well equipped with electric points. gas points, and many other amenities. Cr. Camfield said the council would be failing in its duty if it did not get the use of the immigration hostel. for the use of the community and various bodies seeking accommodation, the council could much mote easily make an approach to obtain the tenancy than interested organisations could individually. The council, he said. did not need to take the responsibility of running the place Cr. Duff said he thought the council should not rush into obtaining the tenancy till it knew the terms. The council, he said, could become committed to take it over.
