Sentenced For Two Deaths
(NJZ. Press Assn.— Copyright) MELBOURNE, June 8. Douglas Alfred Mauger. aged 22. found guilty by a Melbourne criminal court jury today of the murder of two teenage girls, smiled as he was sentenced to death by Mr Justice Monahan. 'Mauger was charged with having, on December 6 last year, murdered his former fiancee, Lynette Alice Ainsworth, aged 19, and her sister, Anthea Winifred Rose Ainsworth, aged 16. The Crown alleged that Mauger first shot Anthea at her home with a .22 rifle because he believed she had contributed to the breakdown of his engagement to Lynette It was alleged that Mauger then decoyed Lynette from her father’s garage, where she worked, and that he shot her in his car.
Mauger pleaded not guilty. A plea of insanity was entered on his behalf by his counsel, Mr K. Anderson, Q.C.
