(N ZJ^.A.-Rmter—Copyright)

MANCHESTER, June 9.

England, forced to follow on 296 runs behind West Indies on Saturday, in the first test at Old Trafford, may yet save the game over the remaining two days. A stout-hearted second innings opening partnership by M. J. Stewart and J. H. Edrich gave the side the only chance it has now of winning some of the game’s honours.

e E ? l r . ,ie S’ England was shattered by the off-spin of L. Gibbs, and the pace of w . Hall, and was out for 205 in reply to the touring team’s 501 for six declared.

Then Edrich and Stewart batted attractively in England's second innings to score 93 in 100 minutes before Edrich was superbly caught at backward short-leg 10 minutes before the close of play.

England was then 97 for one and needed another 199 runs to avoid an innings defeat. The pitch was helping the spinners a litUe in the later stages of the game on Saturday and a tense fight is anticipated on Monday. England’s batsmen will have to show more spirit titan they did in the first innings when their last six wickets fell in 50 dramatic minutes before tea while 24 runs were scored. Gibbs’ Fine Spell Gibbs, flighting the ball well and getting some turn, took five wickets for 59 in 293 overs. Earlier, Hall had demoralised the pride of England’s batting in a spell of three wickets for 21 runs. The English captain, E. R Dexter, was the only batsman to show any form. He bit two sixes and seven fours in a great innings of 73. which lasted nearly three hours.

England's rout started w hen Hall induced Edrich tc g.ve a catch to the wicketkeeper. D. Murray, without adding to his overnight score From this moment England was struggling. K. F. Barrington made two fine strokes in a bright 16 before snicking a catch to Murray at 61. Then M. C. Cowdrey had his leg stump sent flying, without offering a stroke, as he shuffled across his wicket Dexter and Stewart took the score to 108 before Stewart went just before lunch for 37. D. B. Close shared a fifth wicket partnership of 73 in 85 mirvites with Dexter before mistiming a big hit off Gibbs.

F. J. Titrmis gave short-leg a catch after failing to get off the mark tn a 20-minute stay and at 192 Dexter’s fine innings ended. He played forward to a spinning delivery from Sobers and was caujJU off bis glove in the gully. WEST INDIES First Innings C Hunte, c Titmusi b Alien 182 M. Carew, c Andrew, b Trueman .. 16 R.
