Tarmine Outstays Southern Rivals

DUNEDIN, June 9.

Tarmine, a winner at Riccarton at Easter, caused an upset in the Otago Hurdles, the feature jumping event at Wingatui on Saturday, when he . outstayed the favourites, Vamoose and Grant.

Ridden by E. B. Skelton, Tarnine was well back early, but was in a challenging position from the half-mile. He revelled in the going and drew clear from the last fence to win by three lengths. Trained at Waimate by R P. Langford, Tarmine is raced by Mr C. E. Leighton. He was fourth favourite and paid £7 15s.

The Frenchman put in two bad jumps and tailed off early. Goodbye and Morelia disputed the pace.

Running to the mile, Goodbye bounced his rider, B. T. Jones, ouit of the saddle but he made a good recovery and soon recovered the lost ground. Cashmere and Grant shared the trail ahead of Vamoose and clear of Tarmine.

.Goodbye fell two fences from home and this left Grant clear into the straight from Tarmine, with Morelia and Vamoose three lengths back.

Tarmlne moved up to take the last fence on terms with Grant. Vamoose was close on behind.

Tannine ran on to win by three lengths, and Vamoose easily beat Grant, by five lengths. The Frenchman was beaten off 10 lengths back, with Morelia last.

First For Season

Bayline scored his first win for the season when he outstayed the second favourite. Port Lanyard, in the Dunedin Steeplechase. The winner and runner-up were on terms at the last fence, and Bayline won by half a length. Bayline was well back in the early stages of the race but moved up to dispute the pace with Arctic Star and Port Lanyard at the three furlongs. The favourite. The Ranger, was the first casualty, losing his rider at the sod wall with nine furlongs to run when at the rear of the field

With a round to go, Lucky Bill led Callamara, Tidal Rip, and Port Lanyard, with Waikiwi Star and Arctic Star close up. At the board fence near the mile, Waikiwi Star. Lucky Bill, and Port Lanyard were on terms clear of Colossal Callamara. Tidal Rip and Bayline.

Bayline moved up to be handy after jumping the double in the back stretch and was in line with Arctic Star and Port Lanyard running to the three furlongs. Bayline and Port Lanyard drew clear, with Bayline finishing best by half a length Tidal Rip finished on for third five lengths back and seven lengths clear of the weakening Waikiwi Star.
