The Estuary
Sir, The Christchurch Drainage Board’s proposals for the Estuary are of great interest to many people and d’serve careful study. There is no doubt that the whole area should be cleaned up and the smells stopped. They may be partly (if not wholly) caused by trade wastes. The Estuary is a fine wild-life sanctuary where many people may enjoy the pleasures of yachting, fishing, and watching birds and other estuarine life. At present it is flushed out twice daily by the tides The proposals would make it into a lake filled by the overflow from sewerage ponds and the polluted waters of the Heathcote and Avon rivers. The glitering promise of a
•■f-esh” water lake should be regarded with caution. A growing city is certain to provide more wastes of all kinds and most of these would tend to concentrate in this illusory fresh-water lake.—Yours, etc., GEORGE GUY. May 30, 1963
