PROTECTION OF AFRICANS
Action Urged In Rhodesia (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 11. A United Nations subcommittee today urged Britain to “take a more direct and positive position” to protect the interests of the African majority in Southern Rhodesia. At the same time the group, which had talks with British Ministers in London last month, declared that the “deteriorating situation” in the colony warranted action by the General Assembly in special session. Today’s report also suggested that the attention of the Security Council be drawn to the situation in Southern Rhodesia. The report said: ‘The subcommittee is of the opinion that the present situation in Southern Rhodesia demands that the United Kingdom, consistent with its obligations to protect the interests of the majority of the territory’s inhabitants, should take a more direct and positive position concerning future action,” the report said. “It believes that the most appropriate course, and one which would produce a just solution is to call a conference of representatives of all parties concerned to draw up a new constitution based on universal adult franchise.”
