Filmigoers abused each other and cheered and hooted during the screening yesterday of the controversial official French entry to the Cannes Film Festival. “Les Abysses.” The film describes in gruesome, occasionally hilarious scenes the efforts of two maids to prevent, their bourgeois employers from selling their rural dwelling. There are two brutal killings in the vital scene. “The film is scandalous,” cried one spectator. Defenders of the film retorted: "This audience is not worthy of a film festival,” and ‘‘Get out if you don’t like it.” Some did. “Les Abysses” was made by Greek-born Nico Papatakis. At a news conference after the showing a woman told Mr Papatakis: “It is not a French film because you are not French.” Her voice was drowned by jeers. “Les Abysses” was filmed in 30 d®y« on a “shoe-string” budget.
