HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT
Former Mayor Of Lyttelton Hurt
A former Mayor of Lyttelton. Mr Frederick George Briggs, aged 64, of 24 Exeter street, Lyttelton. was knocked down in Christchurch last night by a car which did not stop. Mr Briggs was unconscious for a time after Che accident He was taken to the Christchurch Hospital with a suspected fracture of a hip. He was found to be suffering from severe bruising and shock only His condition was reported to be satisfactory
A man and a woman who saw the accident said that Mr Briggs was walking across the intersection of Worcester and Montreal streets when he was struck by a creamy-white car which was travelling fast. The accident happened about 1020 p.m
Mr Briggs was Mayor of Lyttelton from 1948 to 1959 He is at present caretaker of the School for Deal Sumner.
It was the second hit-and-run accident to pedestrians in Christchurch in two midtts. On Wednesday Mr Thomas McPhee, aged 59. was hit by a car at the corner of Wilsons road and Stevens street about 10.30 p.m. He suffered a broken leg and head and face injuries. He is still in Christchurch Hospital, where his condition is satisfactory.
