Reversion To Old System
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 2.
A new system of allocating labour whereby overseas ships were given two gangs on arrival, and coasters one gang, instigated on April 1 at the request of the Shipowners’ Federation, had been a failure as far as the Wellington waterfront was concerned, the general manager of the Wellington Harbour Board (Mr H. Meachen) said today. Mr Meachen said the board agreed to a trial of the new system. “If we had not stopped it, however, we would have had a harbour full of ships at anchor,” he said. “We have now reverted to what operated previously in the port, that of ships waiting their turn for labour as it becomes available.”
