N.Z. Venue For Tropical Meteorology Symposium

WELLINGTON, April 15. An international symposium on tropical meteorology will be held in Rotorua from November 5 to 15 this year under the joint sponsorship of the World Meteorological organisation and the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. Thi* was announced yesterday by the Director of the New Zealand Meteorological Service. Dr R G Simmers He said New Zealand would be glad to act as host to the symposium because New Zealand meterologists had a particular interest in the tropics "Physical processes in the
atmosphere in tropical latitudes have a profound effect on the behaviour of the atmosphere in higher latitudes and efforts are being made to gain a better understanding of hese interactions." he said.
“In addition. New Zealand provides the meteorological services for international aviation and for British communities in the tropical South Pacific.
“Exchanges of ideas between meteorologists from different areas are of considerable mutual benefit " The New Zealand representative on the planning committee for the symposium is Dr J F Gabites. assistant director (Research), who is also a member of the World Meteorological Organisation panel of experts on tropical meteorology that will meet at Rotorua at the same time.
Last year Dr Gabites was a lecturer on tropical cyclones at a United Nations seminar in Tokyo.
