Breakfast For Travellers

Sir,— According to a recent news item, breakfast for travellers arriving at Christchurch from the inter-island steamers is the subject of a remit to the forthcoming conference of the South Island Publicity Association. This matter is certainty overdue for attention. Travellers from the north who wish to go on to Mount Cook. Queenstown, and other tourist resorts hardly have time on busy days to get a taxi that will take them to where the motor coach starts from. No breakfast at all, not even a cup of tea! After travelling 50 miles down the road, those who are lucky may have time to snatch a cup of tea and a sandwich. This must Last them tall after noon, when they have been six hours out of bed and arc in the third vehicle of the day That is what a monopoly in road transport leads to. What an introduction for overseas tourists. Yours, etc., DISGUSTED. March 28, 1963 [The district traffic manager of the Ra.lways Department (Mr J. T. P. Jones) said: “The train which meets the inter-island steamer express departs from the wharf at Lyttelton as soon as the passengers have disembarked and boarded the tram. It arrives at Christchurch at approximately 7.25 am. and breakfast is available in the station restaurant from 7 a.m. This department does not operate any road service from Christchurch to Mount Cook or Queenstown and so far as rail passengers are concerned there is ample time for breakfast before continuing journeys.”]
