S.I. PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION

Fewer Locaf Body Members Reasons for the withdrawal of some loeal bodies from the South Island Publicity Association will be investiga>ted with a view to encouraging them to continue support, the executive decided yesterday. Twelve local bodies had stopped subscribing, said the secretary (Mr T. D. Flint). This meant a decrease of £320 in local body subscriptions, compared with last year. The withdrawals did not accurately reflect the situation, which was quite healthy, said Mr B. H. Paton. Private members, whose subscriptions far outweighed those of focal bodies, had increased from 3574 to 4187. “It is very important that the association has the support of all local bodies regardless of their size, or the amount of their subscription,” said Mr E. G. Beckett. “Without them we are not properly representative of the South Island.” The association would get the whole-hearted support of all local bodies in the South Island if it joined the national body—the New Zealand Travel and Holidays' Association, said Mr C. McKenzie (Southland). “Failure to be connected with the national organisation is the cause of many of the focal bodies leaving,” he said. “ For only £5 we could get the whole of the South Island behind us.” Membership of the New Zealand Travel and Holidays’ Association is the subject of a notice of motion to come before the association’s conference in Christchurch today. Mr A. S. Abernathie (Timaru) said lack of funds was the primary reason for many of the lapses. Most of the local bodies concerned were in small areas and were not very financial, he said. Mr Flint reported the association had about £7OOO in hand. None of this was at present committed, but it was thought about £2OOO would be spent on. publications being considered at present, he said.
