NEW BUILDING AT ILAM

Architect Outlines Plans It was hoped that the new student union building on the Ham university site would be built by 1966, the president of the Canterbury University Students’ Association (Mr N. B. Ullrich) said at the association’s annual meeting. The architect for the building (Mr Miles Warren) described the building and its facilities. With an area of about 40.000 sq. ft, the building would include a Little Theatre seating nearly 500, club meeting rooms, common rooms, a music room, a cafeteria of 5000 sq. ft, billiards roc-ms, student welfare offl. cers’ rooms, a shop, and an administration block. It was expected that the new building would cost £240,000. Mr Warren outlined his sketch plans, which have been approved by the University Council and the Ministry of Works and are now under consideration by the University Grants Committee. The meeting approved the executive's plans for investigating the possibility of instituting a student dental service when the Ham facilities are completed. Mr Ullrich said that the New Zealand Dental Association had been consulted and a number of alternative plains suggested. At the end of the meeting the association's president for 1963 (Mr N. D. Thomson) took office with his ne wexecutive.
