ATHLETICS Strong Entry For New Brighton 50
New Zealand’s longest one stage footrace will take place on Saturday week with the running of the second “New Brighton 50.” Last year Olympic and Empire Games marathon representative, J. L. Julian, won the event, covering the 50 miles from Hawarden to New Brighton in shr 41min 15sec, just 25min outside the world’s best time.
Although Julian wall not be competing this year, the race has again drawn entries from outaide the province. Thera include I. Keats (Auckland), who represented New Zealand in Japan last year; D. Stevenson, who has run in both the LondonBrighton (S 3 miles) and the South African Comrades (M miles) races; and J. Young (WeUington).
Canterbury marathon representative, M. Munro, are both expected to compete again. Added Interest will be given by the appearance of C. F. Recce, a provteionaJ nominee tor the Empire Games, and G. T. Wiiteon, the Canterbury marathon Champion, who recently announced thae as has final season of serious rood racing.

Sponsored by the New Brighton Bueineoemen’s Association to conjunction with the Canterbury Road Runners’ Association, the race will start at Hawarden at 9 am. and finish at New Brighton about 2.30 pm. To give added interest to the event the Road Runners’ Association is making arrangements for a combined run of harrier clubs from a New Brighton venue. This wild enable members of harrier clubs, who are bolding their opening runs that afternoon, to see the last stages of the 50-mile race.
