Sportsman’s Notebook Second Sponsored Soccer Tourney

Christchurch soccer is to have a second sponsored competition this season. A city firm, M. O’Brien and Company, Ltd., footwear manufacturers, had its offer accepted by the Canterbury Football Association management committee this week. The winning dub will receive £5O in cash and each player in the team will receive a pair of soccer boots. The competition, to be decided on a league basis, will follow the normal Hurley Shield event It will be Canterbury’s second sponsored soccer tournament; the first started last season, was the C.FA. 100. It will be of one round, to be played by the six senior dubs.

Mr E. Williams, secretary of the C.FA., said the offer by the firm was very welcome. The competition has not yet been named, but several suggestions have been submitted to the firm.

An attempt is being made by the C.FA. to start the first soccer pools in New Zealand. An application to run them has been made to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Sir Leon Gertz) but no answer has yet been received. However, the association’s hopes are not bright, for as Mr T. C. Gottermeyer told the management committee legal opinion showed that pools were illegal in New Zealand. • * * Midget Car Titles The South Island (TQ) three-quarter midget car championships are being held at the Billy Philp Memorial Stadium at Templeton on Saturday evening by the Christchurch Speedway Association. J. Morris, the bolder of the lap record at 21.7 sec, must be considered one of the favourites, but J. Williams (holder of the fourlap record) and S. Burt (holder of the six-lap record) should be right up with him. R. Burt, S. Christensen and R. Meed should ateo be well

in the running. The series will be conducted over six races and the highest points scorer over the six events will take the title. * * * Rugby Tour A touring Australian Rugby union team from the Bank of New South Wales will play the University of Canterbury at Ham on April 6. The 26-man team is making a three week’s tour of New Zealand and will play matches against leading clubs at Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington and Invercargill, as well as Christchurch. The captain-coach of the touring party is the former first grade player, A. New. « * * Judo Contest The Canterbury judo championships will be held in Christchurch on Saturday Seven teams will compete for the Sockburn Cup, a trophy which will be at stake in the restricted grades. Apart from local teams, Oamaru and Timaru will also be represented. In the men’s individual championship, the two main Christchurch clubs are expected to take the honours. C. Edwards (Can-Am-Ju) and F. Best (Crichton Cobbers Club) are among the best of the black belts. A women’s contest will be held at the championships for the first time and this is expected to create considerable interest * « « Higher Prices Tickets for the Rugby Union international between England and New Zealand at Twickenham on January 4 next year will cost more, states a London cablegram. Covered stand tickets are to go by 90 per cent to 30s, ring seats win cost 10s against 6s, enclosure tickets 6s against Ss 6d and ground tickets Ss against 4s.
