Tennis DAVIS CUP DRAW
L Gerrard In First Match (N.ZJ’.A.-Reuter — Copyright) MANILA, Mar. 28. The New Zealand champion, L. A. Gerrard. will face the Philippines’ No. two, J. Jose, in thie first match of the Davis Cup Eastern Zone tie ait Manila tomorrow. This was decided at the official draw made today. Gerrard’s team-mate, I. S. Crookenden, will meet the Philippine champion, F. Ampon, in the second match. Both countries will name their doubles team on Saturday. The Filipinos are favoured to beat the New Zealanders who are virtually unknown here. However, those who have watched the visitors training on the day courts of the Rizal Memorial Stadium were impressed by their play. Mir A. S. Bums, captain of the New Zealand team, told reporters at the draw today that he- was “hopeful but not under - estimating the Philippine team.”
The winner of the tie will play Japan in the second round. The tie will include two singles tomorrow, a doubles on Saturday and two more singles on Sunday This is the first time New Zealand has played in the Eastern Zone. The team usually competed in the European Zone and played once in the American Zone.
Burma and Malaya each won a singles when their Davis Cup tie began in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Associated Press reported. Malaya’s S. A. Azman beat Joe Ba Mung, 4-fi, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, and Burma's Than Lwin overwhelmed Yoke Yen, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
