REFINERY DISPUTE
Compulsory Talks (NX. Press Association) ♦ WELLINGTON, Mar. 20. ‘ The Minister of Labour.’ (Mr Shand) will call a compulsory conference in the oil refinery dispute, subject to the resumption of normal work next week. He said tonight he had informed both the unions and employers of his decision. Mr Shand said that unless a dispute began to interfere unreasonably with the rights of others, he did not befaeve a third party should interfere until the parties directly concerned had had adequate time to settle their, difficulties among themselves. “This dispute has now passed its fourth week,” be said. “The wives and families of the men concerned and the trades people of Whangarei are now beginning to suffer unreasonably. “The time has come to call the parties together under an independent chairman, to encourage them to state their respective cases, and argue them out. “As soon as work is resumed, a chairman can be, appointed and discussions, can take place.”
