Big Effort To Seal Off Minefield Fire

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 28. Fire-fighters at the Maramarua coal mine ‘ tonight were preparing for an all-out effort tomorrow morning to attempt to control the ■ fire which broke out in underground workings three days ago.

The mine manager, Mr G. W. McGregor, said tonight that only two tunnels remained to be sealed. These were the main shaft, which is 30ft in diameter, and a smaller side gallery. Rain today hampered efforts to block off these two shafts as the ground became too slippery and dangerous to use heavy machinery. The fires, tonight, were still blazing fiercely in apite of the fact that thousands of gallons water had been piped into the workings. Shifts of men worked

throughout the night pouring water on to the fire.

Mr McGregor said he was hopeful that the job would be completed by Saturday, but it was possible the fire would continue burning underground for months.
